Tell Whole Foods Market: Stop Selling Toxic GMO Sweet Corn!

Whole Foods’ target market is health-conscious consumers. Yet in many Whole Foods Market stores, instead of fresh, organic sweet corn, Whole Foods is sneaking two varieties of GMO sweet corn onto our plates – white and bi-color. Both varieties are labeled in very small print with the word “Bioengineered”, the USDA’s new term for GMO. The GMO sweet corn was spotted in Connecticut, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia and Washington DC, and is being sold at stores across the country. In many cases, GMO corn is the only option given to shoppers.
The corn has up to 3 insecticides genetically engineered into its DNA. THE INSECTICIDES ARE IN EVERY CELL OF THE CORN AND CAN’T BE WASHED OFF. A peer-reviewed study links insecticide-producing GMO corn to leaky gut in lab animals. The corn itself is an EPA-regulated pesticide. If it were on the shelf at Home Depot, it would be required to have an EPA pesticide registration number on the label.
In addition to the built-in insecticides, the GMO sweet corn is genetically engineered to tolerate spraying with either carcinogenic glyphosate-based herbicides, neurotoxic and teratogenic glufosinate-based herbicides linked to autism and birth defects, or both.
Synthetic pesticides are made from fossil fuels and contribute to climate change, biodiversity loss and water pollution. Both herbicides have also been found to harm bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Whole Foods’ annual Impact Report claims that the company is continuing to raise the bar on its commitment to sustainability while it drives forward its purpose to nourish people and the planet. Studies show that GMO corn is toxic and environmentally unsustainable. Not nourishing and not good for the planet.
