WHY SHOULD YOU BUY ORGANIC COTTON?<\/strong>
Most of the world\u2019s cotton today is GMO cotton, which requires a lot of water, synthetic fertilizers, and synthetic pesticides to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The petroleum-based fertilizers used on GMO cotton fields end up polluting lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. Fertilizer pollution is partially responsible for many of the toxic algal bloom events that you may have read about in recent years, killing fish and other water organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything that flows through the Mississippi River eventually deposits into the Gulf of Mexico. The fertilizer runoff from agricultural states, from the Midwest to Texas, pollutes the Mississippi River and is a main contributor to the Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone, one of the largest ocean areas in the world \u2013 roughly the size of New Jersey \u2013 where nothing can live. No plants. No animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s now well known that the toxic synthetic pesticides widely used on GMO cotton \u2013 glyphosate, dicamba and 2,4-D herbicides and neonicotinoid insecticides \u2013 cause immeasurable harm to important pollinating insects like bees and butterflies, birds and mammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organic cotton farming uses 91% less water. And organic regulations prohibit the use of the synthetic fertilizers that pollute our water and the synthetic pesticides that kill the bees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY SHOULD YOU AVOID SYNTHETIC FABRICS?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, nearly all synthetic fibers — such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic — are petroleum-based plastic materials made using innumerable toxic petroleum-based chemicals. As plastic products break down in the environment, they don\u2019t magically disappear. They continually break down into smaller and smaller particles \u2013 microplastics and nanoplastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microplastics have been found on the highest mountain tops and in the deepest depths of the ocean. These toxic particles contaminate our water, air, and our food. The microplastics also leach the toxic chemicals that they\u2019re made from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s in the environment will eventually make it into our bodies through inhalation, absorption and diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flurry of recent studies have shown that microplastics are in our blood, lungs, kidneys, livers, and even lodged in our brains. Studies have found them in men\u2019s testicles and in women\u2019s breast milk. And these particles can pass from a pregnant mother to her unborn baby. The most recent study found microplastics in lungs, hearts, livers, kidneys and brains of newborn test rats, proving that the particles persist after being passed from mother to baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most common microplastics in the environment are microfibers \u2013 plastic fragments shaped like tiny threads or filaments. The largest source of microfiber pollution comes from synthetic fabrics. Each time a piece of synthetic clothing is washed, several million microfibers can be released, polluting the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We previously mentioned microplastics in the air. YES, the plastic fibers shed by synthetic clothes can be inhaled. Pretty depressing to think about, isn\u2019t it? Scientists are alarmed by the serious health consequences microplastic pollution will have for our collective, long-term health. We are, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
