The ingredients, linked to cancer and developmental issues in children \u2013 brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, red dye 3 and titanium dioxide \u2013 are already banned in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Introduced by Democratic State Assemblymembers Jesse Gabriel and Buffy Wicks at the beginning of February, the legislation would prohibit the manufacture, sale, delivery and distribution of food products that contain any of the five harmful ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AB-418 passed on the Assembly Floor with a vote of 54 Ayes, 12 Noes, and 14 No Vote Received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Peeps_Marshmallow_Red_Dye_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"634\" src=\"https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Peeps_Marshmallow_Red_Dye_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Peeps_Marshmallow_Red_Dye_3-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Peeps_Marshmallow_Red_Dye_3-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Peeps_Marshmallow_Red_Dye_3.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peeps Marshmallow products contain Red Dye 3, linked to cancer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported by Common Dreams: &#8220;We don&#8217;t love our children any less than they do in Europe, and it&#8217;s not too much to ask food and beverage manufacturers to switch to the safer alternative ingredients that they already use in Europe and so many other nations around the globe,&#8221;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news-release\/2023\/05\/california-assembly-passes-first-nation-ban-chemicals-processed\" target=\"_blank\"> said<\/a> Gabriel, who chairs the state Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection. The five chemicals banned under AB-418 are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/expert-answers\/bvo\/faq-20058236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brominated vegetable oil<\/a>, which is used in some sodas and other beverages and has been linked to neurological symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news\/2022\/05\/cancer-causing-chemical-may-be-lurking-your-bread\" target=\"_blank\">Potassium bromate<\/a>, which is used in some flour and found in many packaged bread products, and has been found to cause cancer in lab animals&#8217; thyroids, kidneys, and other organs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Propylparaben#section=1D-NMR-Spectra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Propylparaben<\/a>, an antifungal agent used in cosmetics as well as foods which has been found to have developmental and reproductive toxicity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/food-additives\/red-dye-3-banned-in-cosmetics-but-still-allowed-in-food-a3467381365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red dye 3<\/a>, a food coloring that&#8217;s been linked to cancers in lab animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/titanium-dioxide-in-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Titanium dioxide<\/a>, which is used in some food products to make them appear bright white and has been linked to DNA damage and cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If AB-418 clears the California Senate and is signed by the governor, candies and processed foods such as Skittles, Peeps, and many others would be banned in the state unless they are reformulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Big Food is lobbying hard to prevent this important legislation from passing, fearing that other states will follow California\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help Pass AB-418 for a Safer Food System!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Californians, step up and send an email to your state Senators. <a href=\"https:\/\/gmofreeusa.salsalabs.org\/caab418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TAKE ACTION HERE<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/gmofreeusa.salsalabs.org\/caab418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re outside California but have family or friends in the state, please share this blog and ask them to take action.
