The lawsuit charges that Panera exploits consumers\u2019 preferences and willingness to pay more for products marketed as \u201cclean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This lawsuit comes on the heels of GMO Free USA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/food-testing\/eating-out-a-date-with-glyphosate\">glyphosate in restaurant foods report.<\/a> Certain Panera samples contained the highest glyphosate levels of fifteen restaurants tested.<\/p>\n<p>The National Restaurant Association \u201cTop 10 Concept Trends of 2018\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/toxinfreeusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NRA_Whats_Hot_Culinary_Forecast_2018.pdf\">survey<\/a> of 700 chefs ranked \u201cnatural ingredients\/clean menus\u201d as a top three consumer dining trend. Restaurateurs are aware that the general public is increasingly seeking out healthy foods, free from unnatural ingredients and synthetic chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPanera has invested heavily in a campaign, convincing consumers that their food is \u2018clean.\u2019  Reasonable consumers would expect that Panera\u2019s food would be glyphosate-free,\u201d said Jaclyn Bowen, executive director of Clean Label Project.<\/p>\n<p>Last week a federal civil jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/monsanto-verdict-san-francisco-jury-awards-80-million-to-edwin-hardeman-who-claimed-roundup-weed-killer-caused-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered<\/a> Monsanto to pay more than $80 million in damages to Edwin Hardeman over his claim that the weed killer Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin lymphoma after decades of use. This was the second jury to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/aug\/10\/monsanto-trial-cancer-dewayne-johnson-ruling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rule against Bayer<\/a> in a Roundup cancer lawsuit. More than 11,200 cancer cases await trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlyphosate is a patented chelator, antibiotic, and is linked to serious adverse health effects including cancer, infertility, and non-alcoholic fatty liver and kidney diseases. Glyphosate shouldn\u2019t be present in the food system. A company that willfully misrepresents its products as \u2018clean\u2019 must be held accountable,\u201d said Diana Reeves, executive director of GMO Free USA.<\/p>\n<p>The Panera suit, filed under the D.C.
