New Fairfield, CT, April 3, 2026 —  Public interest nonprofit GMO/Toxin Free USA (TFUSA) succeeded in delaying a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposal to allow a novel, synthetic food dye produced by Phytolon Ltd. to enter the U.S. food supply and be labeled as “natural.”

This marks a rare and significant moment of accountability, where a federal agency paused a corporate-benefiting decision due to public interest advocacy. It represents a powerful step toward our vision of full food transparency, stronger safety standards, and a system that prioritizes people and the environment over industry convenience.

Phytolon’s synthetic food color, Beetroot Red, is produced through a genetic engineering technique called Synthetic Biology, or SynBio, and often referred to as “precision fermentation,” or misleadingly as only “fermentation.”

On February 6, 2026, the FDA issued a Final Order for Phytolon’s color additive petition to allow the synthetic food dye to enter the food market by “amending the color additive regulations to provide for the safe use of beetroot red for the coloring of human foods generally.” The order would have gone into effect March 23, 2026.

TFUSA submitted a document of objection during the FDA’s public comment period ending March 9, 2026. The full submission can be read HERE.

TFUSA’s primary objections to Phytolon’s Beetroot Red are:

  • Beetroot Red is a product of SynBio, an extreme form of genetic engineering that starts in a lab and finishes in industrial vats, and should not be allowed to be labeled “natural.” Further, no products made with SynBio food dyes should be allowed to claim “no artificial colors.”
  • Phytolon failed to provide adequate proof of safety of synthetic Beetroot Red for long-term human consumption.
  • Potential contamination by novel proteins or byproducts of the genetic engineering process could present a food safety risk and have not been addressed.
  • Phytolon failed to respond to FDA’s feedback and required followup testing.

The FDA responded to TFUSA’s objection by issuing a statement on March 24: “As of March 20, 2026, the effective date of the final order published February 6, 2026 (91 FR 5295) is delayed indefinitely. The FDA will publish a document in the Federal Register announcing a new effective date or other administrative action on the order.” The FDA added: “We received a submission from GMO/Toxin Free USA containing objections that meet the conditions set forth in 21 CFR 12.22 to initiate a stay of the effective date of the final order.”

In a statement to Food Navigator USA, Michael Hansen, Senior Scientist at Consumer Reports, agreed that the production process of genetic engineering could leave contaminants in the product and present a food safety risk. “You can often find in the final product, 15, 20, 30, 40 different proteins, or other things in there. So, you should be identifying whether any of those raise safety concerns.”

Dr. Hansen added, “They should absolutely let consumers know that is a genetically engineered color or genetically modified. They should not be able to call that ‘not artificial’ or ‘natural.’ We have done enough surveys to show that people do not consider engineered things to be natural.”

The FDA also stated, “Our announcement of the delay of the effective date of the final order does not reflect a change in our determination that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from the use of this color additive under the proposed conditions of its intended use.”

Diana Reeves, Executive Director of TFUSA, said, “We need to wait for the FDA’s follow-up determination on Beetroot Red. But if the FDA later decides to approve the synthetic dye despite the safety issues, the agency must not allow SynBio food additives to be labeled ‘natural,’ or ‘no artificial colors.’ In fact, this is a product of genetic engineering and should require a GMO or bioengineered label. This administration campaigned on bringing transparency to our food system. The administration is also currently campaigning on eating ‘real food.’ Swapping synthetic petroleum-based dyes for synthetic genetically engineered dyes and allowing the industry to call the products ‘natural’ would be a betrayal of the promises made by the administration.”

“The food industry should take careful note: Attempts to pull the wool over America’s eyes, calling SynBio products ‘natural’ or ‘non-GMO,’ will not go over well for your brands in the long run,” added Reeves.

TFUSA will continue to campaign on this issue, educating the public about newer forms of genetic engineering such as SynBio and gene-editing, and galvanize public rejection of genetically engineered foods that have not been independently safety tested.

WASHINGTON D.C., March 15, 2026 — Nonprofits Toxin Free USA (TFUSA) and Corporate Accountability Lab (CAL) filed a consumer protection lawsuit against Aqua Star Corp., for false and deceptive marketing of its shrimp products. While Aqua Star claims that its shrimp products are “pure,” “sustainable,” and “responsible,” in reality they may be tainted by antibiotics and, possibly, radioactive isotopes; they are produced under exploitative labor conditions, involving a high risk of forced labor; and they cause environmental harm. Aqua Star is a major seller of shrimp in the United States and sells its shrimp throughout the United States and Washington, D.C., including Target, Giant, Balducci’s, Safeway, Save A Lot, Harris Teeter, and Kroger.

Aqua Star features the words “Responsibly & Naturally Farmed” alongside a “Seafood Forever | Responsibly Sourced” logo prominently on the front of its shrimp packages. The company also goes to great lengths on its website to convince consumers its seafood is sourced in an ethical, environmentally sound and socially conscious manner throughout its supply chain, and that its shrimp is pure, healthy, and nutritious.

Aqua Star claims, “We are dedicated to the long-term health of the local environments and economies in which we operate—and to the well-being of the people who depend on them. Our Seafood Forever™ program is based on four pillars we view as critical to the long-term health of our people and our planet: Responsibility, Traceability, Social Responsibility, and Food Safety.”

Despite marketing its shrimp as “pure” and “healthy,” the company makes no mention of the potential presence of radioactive isotopes and antibiotics in its shrimp. In 2025, there were multiple recalls of Aqua Star shrimp products due to possible contamination with the man-made radioisotope of Cesium-137, which can elevate a person’s risk of developing cancer and cause other serious health ailments.

Also in 2025, the U.S. FDA refused entry for shrimp from one of Aqua Star’s suppliers due to contamination with nitrofurans, antibiotics, and/or veterinary drug residues. Because the FDA tests only 0.1% of all shrimp imports for veterinary drug residues, the true scale of antibiotic residues in Aqua Star’s shrimp may be significantly underreported, posing an ongoing risk to consumers.

Health experts have been sounding the alarm that the overuse of medically important antibiotics in animal factory farms is leading to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, endangering public health. Industrial aquaculture farms employ the same practices as terrestrial factory farms—animals are crowded so densely that antibiotic use is necessary in attempts to control the spread of disease among the animals.

A peer-reviewed study published in March 2026, in the journal Nature Medicine, found that a single course of antibiotics could disrupt the gut microbiome for years. And a groundbreaking 2025 study identified imported shrimp as a vector spreading bacteria resistant to the antibiotic colistin. The researchers found no similar harm posed by U.S.-produced shrimp.

“Shrimp sourced from farms that are known to use antibiotics in production, and found to be contaminated with Cesium-137, are in no way shape or form ‘healthy’.  Additionally, if shoppers were aware that Aqua Star’s ‘responsibly sourced’ shrimp come from filthy farms and are processed in filthy packing facilities, they wouldn’t put them in their grocery carts. The misleading marketing must stop,” said Diana Reeves, executive director of TFUSA.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch (“Seafood Watch”) warns consumers to avoid whiteleg shrimp farmed in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Vietnam due to a “high risk to the environment.” There are concerns that shrimp facilities in these countries are not properly managing effluent discharge; failing to implement and enforce regulations; and struggling to implement or enforce effective chemical regulations.

Aqua Star sources a significant amount of its shrimp from India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Shrimp facilities in these countries are far from environmentally sound or respectful of local communities. For example, Indian shrimp hatcheries and shrimp farms have taken over coastal shorelines, adversely affecting marine diversity, native fishermen, farmers, and local communities. These facilities release effluents into local waterways, polluting freshwater systems and coastal waters, reducing wild fish populations, and threatening the economic survival of traditional fishing communities.

A three-year investigation by Corporate Accountability Lab, which involved more than 150 worker interviews across India’s shrimp industry, found pervasive labor abuses — including at Nekkanti Sea Foods, a supplier linked to Aqua Star. According to the report, Nekkanti workers were reportedly paid less than half a living wage, housed in overcrowded, unsanitary company-controlled facilities with restricted freedom of movement, and required to work without adequate protective gear.

Migrant workers, especially women, who live in Nekkanti’s company-provided housing experienced restricted freedom of movement. Workers reported being allowed to leave the facilities only once a week or even once a month, with guards monitoring the on-site facilities. Workers have also described practices consistent with debt bondage.

By late 2024, U.S. government agencies had reached similarly troubling conclusions. The Department of Labor added Indian shrimp to its official List of Goods Produced by Forced Labor and the State Department flagged indicators of forced labor at Indian shrimp facilities in its annual Trafficking in Persons Report. Concerns extend to Indonesia as well, where Aqua Star sources from major exporters whose farms rely on informal employment arrangements that researchers say increase the risk of exploitation.

“Shrimp supply chains are incredibly complex, with exploitative labor practices found in the major shrimp supplying countries,” stated Allie Brudney, an attorney at Corporate Accountability Lab. “Aqua Star not only sources from the countries, but from companies named in reports on forced labor. This case asks whether they should be allowed to market such shrimp as socially responsible under D.C. law.”

The public interest nonprofits are seeking no monetary damages—only an end to the deceptive marketing and advertising of Aqua Star’s shrimp products.

The lawsuit was filed under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act. Plaintiffs are represented by Richman Law & Policy.

DENVER, CO, UNITED STATES, June 17, 2025 — A new report released today by the Clean Label Project reveals the presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in a range of food products approved for California’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program—sparking an important conversation about chemical exposure among some of the state’s most vulnerable populations.

The study, funded in part by the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment, tested 71 WIC-approved food products and found detectable levels of phthalates in more than a quarter of items. These chemicals, commonly used in plastic packaging and food processing, are known to interfere with hormone function and have been linked to developmental, reproductive, and behavioral health issues.

While all products tested complied with California Proposition 65 safety thresholds, the findings underscore a larger issue: the lack of regulatory oversight on food packaging and contact materials that can leach harmful substances into the food system.

“This study is a wake-up call,” said Jackie Bowen, Executive Director of Clean Label Project. “Families in the WIC program are doing their best to make healthy choices with limited resources. They deserve to know not just what’s in their food—but what it’s been in contact with. We want to empower parents and caregivers with the information they need to minimize exposure and make informed, safer choices for their families.”

The study found that contamination risk was often linked to packaging type. Products stored in plastic bags, cans, or jars were more likely to contain phthalates or BPA, even when the food itself was unprocessed. In some cases, a single serving of certain canned or bulk foods could exceed California’s “No Significant Risk Level” for chemical exposure.

“Communities served by WIC are already navigating the compounding weight of environmental health disparities,” said Marcha Isabelle Chaudry, Founder and CEO of the Equity and Wellness Collaborative and advocacy advisor for the grant. “Finding endocrine-disrupting chemicals in everyday food items only deepens these inequities. We cannot champion health equity without first ensuring that the most vulnerable families have access to food that is truly safe, clean, and nourishing. This is not just a public health issue—it’s a matter of justice.”

In response, Clean Label Project is urging consumers to:

  • Choose fresh or frozen foods over canned when possible
  • Avoid microwaving in plastic containers
  • Opt for glass or stainless steel for food storage
  • Look for “BPA-free” labels—and question what’s replacing it

The organization is also calling on policymakers and industry leaders to rethink the role of packaging and supply chains in food safety and invest in safer alternatives and clearer labeling standards.

WASHINGTON D.C., June 4, 2025 — Nonprofit GMO/Toxin Free USA has filed a consumer protection lawsuit against Costco Wholesale Corporation. In a separate action, plaintiff Ella Rosewood filed a class action lawsuit against Costco. Both lawsuits against the corporation allege false and deceptive marketing of Kirkland Signature Baby Wipes.

Costco markets its baby wipes as “plastic-free,” “made with naturally derived ingredients,” and “suitable for sensitive skin”. However, independent lab testing conducted for Toxin Free USA found that the product contains significant levels of microplastics, which are associated with a range of harmful health effects—particularly concerning for babies and young children.

Growing scientific research on microplastics and nanoplastics (particles smaller than one micrometer) has heightened concerns among public health experts. Studies have shown that the toxic chemicals embedded within microplastics can be absorbed through the skin, and that microplastic particles can penetrate the skin barrier and bioaccumulate in human organs, including crossing the blood-brain barrier and accumulating in the brain.

“This is deeply troubling. Parents deserve transparency and should not be misled when choosing products for their children. Baby wipes meant to clean and soothe delicate skin should not contain microplastics carrying carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. As a mother who lost her child to cancer, I find this unacceptable,” said Diana Reeves, executive director of Toxin Free USA. “Costco must immediately stop its deceptive marketing and remove microplastics from these baby wipes to protect families.”

The Toxin Free USA lawsuit, filed under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act, seeks to halt Costco’s misleading advertising practices. The class action lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District Court of New York, seeks monetary damages. Both plaintiffs are represented by Richman Law & Policy.

WASHINGTON D.C., April 24, 2025 — Nonprofit GMO/Toxin Free USA filed a lawsuit against WaterWipes, Inc., alleging deceptive marketing of its Plastic-Free Original Baby Wipes product.

WaterWipes advertises its products as “plastic-free” and “the world’s purest baby wipes.” But independent lab testing conducted for Toxin Free USA revealed that the product contains significant levels of microplastics, exposure to which can cause a range of harmful human health consequences—especially when exposure begins at a young age.

Recent and mounting research on microplastics and nanoplastics (particles smaller than one micrometer) has public health experts alarmed. One study documented that the potentially hundreds of toxic chemicals present within microplastics can be absorbed through the skin. Another study confirmed that microplastic particles, which carry toxic chemicals, can also cross the skin barrier. Microplastics in the body can infiltrate every major organ, even breaching the blood-brain barrier and bioaccumulating in the brain.

“This is extremely disturbing. New parents shouldn’t have to worry about misleading marketing while they do their best to protect their babies from exposure to toxins. A product that’s meant to clean a baby shouldn’t contain microplastics full of carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting chemicals. As a mother who lost her child to cancer, I cannot accept this. WaterWipes must cease its advertising claims immediately and work to remove microplastics from its products. Time is of the essence,” said Diana Reeves, Toxin Free USA executive director.

The lawsuit, filed under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act, seeks to end WaterWipes’s deceptive marketing. Plaintiffs are represented by Richman Law & Policy.

WASHINGTON, April 10, 2025 — Nonprofits GMO/Toxin Free USA and Organic Consumers Association filed a lawsuit against Perfect Day, Inc., alleging material omissions and deceptive marketing of its genetically engineered synthetic “dairy” product, ProFerm.

The product, ProFerm, is a bioengineered “whey protein” used by brands such as Bored Cow Animal-Free Dairy Milk and Myprotein Whey Forward Animal Free Protein. ProFerm is made using synthetic biology (synbio) genetic engineering. The industry describes the process as “precision fermentation.”

Perfect Day and brand partners market ProFerm as safe, sustainable, identical to cow-derived whey protein, capable of creating milk identical to cow’s milk including its nutritional profile, and free from GMOs.

Health Research Institute (HRI), an accredited, public-interest laboratory, analyzed ProFerm and a related product, along with certified-biodynamic and certified-organic whole cow’s milk.

HRI’s findings illustrate that representing ProFerm as the same as cow’s whey or capable of creating milk “identical to traditional milk” is false and misleading because:

  • ProFerm is only 13.4% cow’s whey protein.
  • 86.6% of ProFerm proteins are fungal proteins.
  • ProFerm contained 93 fungal compounds not found in cow’s whey.
  • The fungal proteins and compounds are unknown to science, have never been part of the human diet, and are by-products of the GMOs used in the fermentation process.
  • “Milk” produced with ProFerm contains a fraction of the nutritional value of cow’s milk, missing 69 nutrients and containing no omega 3, fatty acids, or vitamins B2, B5, and E.

ProFerm and products made from it are not even remotely similar to cow’s whey or milk.

By HRI’s assessment, the novel compounds and proteins in ProFerm could be or become toxic, allergenic, disruptive to nutrition and biome function, and cause dysbiosis, making them potentially unsafe for human consumption.

“That a nutritionally devoid substance composed primarily of fungal proteins never before consumed by humans could be labeled cow’s whey is deeply concerning. Allowing this aberration into our food supply and classifying it as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) highlights the urgent need to reevaluate our regulatory framework for food,” said Diana Reeves, GTFU Executive Director.

The lawsuit, filed under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act, seeks to end Perfect Day’s deceptive marketing. Plaintiffs are represented by Richman Law & Policy.

New Fairfield, CT Dec 3, 2024 — Non-GMO and organic gardeners and farmers now have a new tool to help them avoid genetically engineered seeds and support independent seed companies sharing their values.

Today, nonprofit GMO/Toxin Free USA (GTFU) launched the Seed Integrity Pledge for Safe Seeds (SIP) program, with a website to raise awareness about the increasing availability of GMO seeds in the consumer market. SafeSeedPledge.org hosts a database of seed companies that have pledged not to sell GMO seeds and plants. The searchable database helps growers find sellers that have taken the Pledge.

“Until recently, GMO seeds have only been available to commodity crop farmers. This past year, GMO tomatoes and petunias entered home and community gardens. More seeds and plants like these are being developed. Additionally, gene-edited crops are becoming harder to track because they aren’t required to be labeled as ‘GMO,’ ‘genetically engineered,’ or with the USDA-created term, ‘bioengineered’,” said Diana Reeves, Executive Director of GTFU.

Reeves added, “A growing number of studies raise concerns about the assumed precision of gene-editing techniques. But the USDA considers gene-edited organisms equivalent to those created by nature and has declined to regulate them. We’ve even seen companies labeling gene-edited foods as non-GMO. The lack of regulation has made it much easier for biotech companies to avoid transparency and labeling. ”

Four corporations control and sell over half of all seeds globally. The number of independent seed companies is declining due to agriculture industry consolidation. A 2023 report by the USDA found that seed industry consolidation coupled with restrictive intellectual property schemes are stifling small, independent, and public seed breeding programs.

“We believe it is critically important to maintain the diversity of independent seed companies. These companies are our champions for biodiversity. We hope many more companies will take the Pledge to help preserve the genetic integrity of our seed supply,” said Reeves.

Seed companies can take the Pledge HERE.

Washington, DC, September 30, 2024 — Nonprofit Toxin Free USA filed a lawsuit against Kimberly-Clark Corporation, alleging deceptive marketing of its U by Kotex tampons.

Kotex says that it is committed to “safety,” and tells consumers, “[w]e prohibit the inclusion of certain substances, including heavy metals such as lead…” Toxin Free USA facilitated lab testing of U by Kotex Click® Compact Regular Tampons and detected lead in the product.

A recent peer-reviewed study on heavy metals in tampons, published in the journal Environment International, detected heavy metals in the products tested. This study prompted Toxin Free USA’s investigation into popular tampon products.

The presence of lead is especially concerning considering that the product is intended for use inside of the human body. According to health and toxicology experts worldwide, there is no safe level of lead in the human body. The World Health Organization stated, “[l]ead exposure is estimated to account for 21.7 million years lost to disability and death worldwide due to long-term effects on health, including 30% of the global burden of idiopathic intellectual disability, 4.6% of the global burden of cardiovascular disease and 3% of the global burden of chronic kidney diseases,” and “even [low blood lead concentrations] may be associated with decreased intelligence in children, [behavioral] difficulties and learning problems.”

“Lead exposure can result in serious health problems, including reproductive health issues. It’s been banned in gasoline. It’s been banned in paint. The FDA should immediately ban lead and heavy metals in feminine hygiene products. The presence of lead in U by Kotex tampons, a product regularly used internally, inside the female reproductive system, is shocking,” said Diana Reeves, Executive Director of Toxin Free USA.

The lawsuit, filed under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act, seeks to end Kimberly-Clark’s deceptive marketing. Plaintiffs are represented by Richman Law & Policy.

Top 32 Toxins to Avoid in Baby & Toddler Products (and safe alternatives!)

September 27, 2024 by Lakin Bayless

Updated January 23, 2025

Table of Contents

In Part 1 of this series, I discussed Preconception and Prenatal health and how to avoid toxins during the critical stages of family-planning and development. Now, I am going to talk about avoiding toxins  that affect babies and toddlers. Most of us know about the typical household chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, lead, asbestos, etc. What other toxins should you be concerned about today? Below is a list of some of the most common toxins that you will encounter in baby and toddler products. I will outline what makes them toxic, where they’re commonly found, and suggest alternatives to avoid them. You’re going to want to save this list.

CHEMICALS USED IN FOOD GROWING, LAWN AND GARDEN

Pesticides are mentioned first because they are so prevalent in our food, water and the environment in which our children play (playgrounds, neighbor’s yards and our own yard – even though I hope to convince you not to use pesticides for  weeds, insects or rodents in your yard!) Babies and toddlers spend more time in direct contact with grass and often put things into their mouths. Pesticides can also be tracked into the house on our shoes, where babies could be exposed on the floor. In addition to direct exposure, pesticides used in your yard may also contaminate well water, which will eventually end up in your drinking water. Even with city water, there is still a risk of pesticide exposure, as treatment facilities only remove some pesticides. The most common treatment methods, chlorine and ozone, only remove 60-70% of pesticide contamination from water samples. Additionally, this treatment can cause dangerous trihalomethanes (THMs) to form. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is a potential link between adverse reproductive outcomes and THMs and it is recommended that THM levels in drinking‑water be kept as low as practicable.

Another mode of exposure to pesticides could be insect treatments or rodent infestation treatments inside the home. Flea and tick treatments use neonics and other very toxic chemicals, which children can come in contact with from their beloved pets. These chemical treatments come in various forms such as spot treatments, collars, and oral solutions.

Besides an increased risk of childhood cancers, such as leukemia and glioblastoma (the most common type of brain cancer), the latest research shows that exposure to these chemicals contributes to the rise in childhood disorders such as autism and ADHD.  A recent study shows that children with ADHD have more pesticide metabolites in their urine. Over 40% of conventional baby food tested in a recent study was contaminated with pesticides, but none were found in organic baby food.

What are some alternatives to avoid pesticides? Whenever possible, sourcing organic food and body care products significantly reduces exposure to pesticides.

  • In our house, we like Serenity Kids for baby & toddler food. Their products are nutrient-dense, certified USDA organic, and Clean Label Project verified. The Clean Label Project independently tests for 200+ contaminants and has verified that these products meet the highest standards.
  • We also love Little Spoon Organic meal subscription service for babies, toddlers and big kids! This wonderful service removes the guesswork from planning healthy, delicious meals for busy families, allowing you to relax.
  • For body care products, a favorite in our household is Earth Mama Organics. They have everything from diaper balms, soaps, lotion and oils, sunscreens and eczema relief. They also offer great products for moms, like belly butter and nipple butter, as well as items for older children.
  • One of the best water filtration systems available is the WaterDrop tankless under-the-sink reverse osmosis system. Our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water – do not skimp on filtering your drinking water! A new study raises concerns about fluoride levels exceeding the safe limits in drinking water. Exposure to fluoride in drinking water at twice the recommended government limit (1.5 milligrams/liter) is linked to lower IQ in kids. Some water systems have been found to have unsafe levels of fluoride. WaterDrop effectively reduces fluoride, TDS, PFOA, PFOS, chlorine, arsenic, lead, and more.
  • For flea and tick treatment of pets, we like EasyDefense Barrier Bites Soft Flea Chews.
  • Natural pest control such as humane electronic mouse traps and peppermint essential oil can be made into a spray as a natural bug repellent for exterior and interior property use.
  • Badger makes a natural, non-Deet mosquito repellent.
  • For natural lawn and garden care, we like Rocky Mountain BioAg and we have also composed a list of some of the best organic lawn & garden  products to keep your yard safe for your children while maintaining a beautiful curb appeal!

Rocky Mountain BioAg is one of the largest organic fertilizer and amendment suppliers and offers cutting-edge technology and products nationwide. Rocky Mountain BioAg was founded in 2008 with a focus on nutrient-dense growing practices, building living organic soil, and solving environmental challenges with probiotic and organic inputs. Their team has successfully pioneered many industries with their proven probiotic and organic solutions. These benefit everyone, from farmers to landscapers, vintners, organic home gardeners, and more. They look forward to working with you on your next project, whether large or small.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children avoid consuming GMOs wherever possible. Many processed food products now indicate whether they contain GMOs, also known as bioengineered foods, thanks to the efforts of activists advocating for GMO labeling. You can access our free eBook on GMO Myths & Facts here.

Look for the following words on ingredient labels and packaging to identify GMO foods:

Bioactive | Biodesigned | Bioengineered or “BE” | Bioidentical | Biotechnology/product of biotechnology | Synbio/synthetic biology |Precision Fermentation | Engineered yeast |Animal-free dairy proteins | Made with yeast, just like beer | Non-transgenic | Breast milk proteins | Determined to be Non-GMO by USDA

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS:

  • The Non-GMO Project  is an independent nonprofit known for its butterfly seal, which identifies products that have been verified as not containing GMOs.Their verification standard allows for a maximum of 0.9% of contamination, which is the same standard in place in the EU. It is the most trustworthy and reliable non-GMO certification available in the U.S.Other non-GMO claims may allow for gene-edited GMOs, oils, and starches that don’t contain GMO proteins, or synthetic foods created with synthetic biology (synbio) to be labeled as non-GMO, and they may contain undetermined levels of GMO contamination. It’s also noteworthy that organics can’t be grown from GMO seeds, but there is very little testing of organic foods for GMO contamination, which can occur via pollen or during processing, handling, and packing. For high-risk foods such as processed products made from corn, soy, or potatoes, we recommend looking for both the USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified logos to avoid GMO contamination and pesticides, as Non-GMO Project Verified products alone may still be grown with synthetic pesticides.
  • Rest assured that the products from our affiliate partners and Amazon storefront are organic and Non-GMO Project Verified whenever applicable.

Artificial food colors and flavors are responsible for many of the bright colors and intense flavors of candy, sports drinks, and baked foods. They are even used in certain brands of pickles, smoked salmon, Pedialyte (oral rehydration solution) and medications, such as Tylenol. The consumption of artificial food colors and flavors has increased by 500% in the last 50 years, and children are the largest consumers.

Artificial colors are substances derived from petroleum that give food color. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) published a report concluding that the nine artificial dyes approved in the United States are likely carcinogenic, may cause hypersensitivity reactions and behavioral problems, or are inadequately tested.

Artificial flavors are made by combining various chemicals to create a specific taste or smell. These chemicals are synthesized in a laboratory. The flavor compounds are then mixed with other ingredients, such as solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives, to create the final artificial flavoring. Some studies suggest that artificial flavors may alter gut bacteria diversity and lead to digestive issues. One study by the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health found that certain artificial flavoring compounds can be carcinogenic and increase the risk of developing lung cancer. There is also concern that certain artificial flavors, particularly those that contain artificial colors, may have an impact on brain health, affecting memory and causing changes to the neurotransmitters in the brain. Some studies have suggested a link between artificial colors and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

How to avoid artificial food coloring and flavoring:

  • Read food and over the counter medicine and prescription drug labels carefully and look for products that do not contain artificial flavors or colors (colors are labeled “FD&C” Red #3, Red #40, Yellow #5 & #6, Blue #1 & #2, and Green #2. In a major move, the FDA has finally banned Red #3, but the ban doesn’t take effect until January 2027 for food, and January 2028 for OTC medications and prescriptions. The dye is linked to cancer in animals and to behavioral issues in children. When baking, use natural food coloring ingredients, such as these found in our Amazon Storefront.
  • A natural oral hydration solution alternative to Pedialyte, is Berri Lyte, which does not use any artificial flavors or colors.
  • For fever and pain relief, our first preference is Boiron Aconitum. Our second preference is Genexa Children’s Pain and Fever Relief.
  • Skip ingredients with numbers in their names, as these are often artificial additives.
  • Choose whole, minimally processed foods that are less likely to contain artificial additives.

Titanium Dioxide is most commonly used in candy, it can also be found in salad dressings, chewing gum, ice cream, frozen pizzas, drink and jello mixes, and many other foods. In 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reevaluated titanium dioxide. After considering more studies, EFSA concluded that nanoparticle-size titanium dioxide can accumulate in the body, break DNA strands, and cause chromosomal damage. European food safety regulators have since classified titanium dioxide as no longer safe for human consumption, and in 2022, banned it outright. However, it is still legal for use in food in the US.

To limit or avoid exposure to titanium dioxide in foods, consider these steps:

  • Check food product labels and avoid those with titanium dioxide. Food companies are required to list titanium dioxide on packaged food ingredient labels. In some cases, it may be listed simply as ‘artificial color’ or ‘color added.’
  • Choose packaged foods that are certified organic, whenever possible. These products must meet strong standards that protect consumers from exposure to potentially harmful additives. Certified organic foods are prohibited from containing titanium dioxide.

INGREDIENTS FOUND IN FORMULA AND DAIRY

Emulsifiers: People who frequently consume products containing mono- and diglycerides have a 24% higher risk of developing breast cancer and a 46% higher risk of prostate cancer. Researchers found a 32% higher risk of breast cancer in women who frequently eat products containing Carrageenan. These unnecessary ingredients are used in thousands of processed foods as emulsifiers to keep food blended together, improve texture, and preserve shelf life. They are commonly found in infant formulas and toddler drinks. While breastfeeding should be considered first, many women struggle or are unable to breastfeed.

GMO Synthetic Milk – also known as “animal-free dairy milk,” hit the market in 2023. The companies, including Bored Cow, Nestlé’s Cowabunga, and Strive, claim that ‘milk’ and ‘dairy’ made from a genetic engineering process called synthetic biology (SynBio) is identical to cow’s milk. They call the genetic engineering “precision fermentation.” Well, there’s nothing precise about it. A lab investigation of Bored Cow’s product reveals that the process of synbio is not precise and the end product is nowhere close to being identical to cow’s milk. The lab found 92 small molecules in the product that are currently unknown to science. The unknown molecules could be nutrients or waste products generated during the fermentation process. They also found that the GMO synthetic milk lacked many of the healthy nutrients present in real milk. As if that weren’t enough, they also found a fungicide, benthiavalicarb-isopropyl, typically used on conventional grapes and tomatoes, in the synbio milk. There has been no safety testing on Bored Cow’s products.

Another synthetic ‘breast milk’ product is being developed by a company called Biomilq. Biomilq received $3.5 million from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, an investment firm founded by Bill Gates, for their research. Biomilq plans to partner with manufacturers that can include its nutrients in their formula products and they expect to make a major announcement soon.

To make matters worse, the U.S. government allows Bored Cow, Biomilq, and similar companies to label their products as non-GMO. It is worth noting that the Non-GMO Project will not certify Bored Cow or any synbio products as non-GMO, so you can trust that products bearing the Non-GMO Project Verified butterfly label will never contain synbio ingredients.

Thankfully, we have milk-safe alternatives:

  • Earth’s Best Organic Formula is our top choice.
Each child is unique and may have different dietary tolerances. Thankfully, Earth’s Best offers different formulas based upon digestive needs such as reduced lactose or easy to digest proteins for fussiness, gas and crying.
  • Find a local farmer that sells fresh milk and raises cattle organically at realmilk.com (for children over the age of 1). Some farmers offer A-2 milk, which is lower in allergens and easier to digest.
  • Buy organic milk at your local grocery store such as Organic Valley (for children over the age of 1).  Organic Valley also offers A-2 and lactose free milk.

Indoor air toxins that babies & toddlers are exposed to

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gasses from various solids and liquids. These compounds can cause both short-term and long-term adverse health effects. Here’s what you need to know about VOCs and their impact on children:

The most common sources of VOCs are paints, paint strippers, solvents, wood preservatives, Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF),  aerosol sprays, cleansers, disinfectants, repellents, air fresheners, perfumes, laundry detergents, dryer sheets, carpet, stored fuels, and automotive products. Prolonged exposure to VOCs may lead to serious health issues, including damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Some VOCs are even associated with cancer in animals and are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans. Children are particularly susceptible and vulnerable to VOC exposure. Higher concentrations of VOCs in homes may increase their risk of developing asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and other health problems.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood material made from wood waste and recycled fibers. The most common sources of formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins are the glues used during production of MDF furniture and cabinetry and the moldings used to construct new homes. These adhesives can lead to off-gassing which can linger in your home for months or even years. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, which can cause cancer if exposed to high levels over time. Recently, the EPA determined that formaldehyde causes cancer, in a step towards regulation.

Benzene – Natural gas and propane stoves emit benzene, a substance linked to leukemia and other blood cancers. Levels of benzene can reach higher than those found in secondhand tobacco smoke. If you have a gas stove in your home, proper ventilation is essential. You can use an exhaust fan, open windows, or create a draft with additional fans while cooking. An alternative option is to replace your gas stove with an electric one.

Flame Retardants – These are commonly found in car seats, clothing, furniture and mattresses. The CPSC warns that compounds in organohalogen flame retardants (OFRs) are carcinogenic and exposure may be linked to developmental disabilities, increased hyperactivity, premature puberty, hormone disorders and immune disorders. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable since they tend to put objects in their mouths and spend a lot of time on the floor. Studies show that children have higher concentrations of flame retardants in their bodies.

Ensuring clean air in your living space is crucial, especially for children. Here are some effective strategies:

Ingredients that are found in Baby & Toddler Shampoo, Body Wash and Lotion products

Sulfates are used to remove dirt and oil from surfaces and skin. They are also common in bath and cleaning products because they increase foaming. Unfortunately, sulfates can be harsh on sensitive skin and exacerbate conditions like eczema. The manufacturing process for sulfates can create 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen, which is why you want to avoid sulfates in both children’s and adult products.

Parabens – Parabens are used in cosmetics and personal care products with the intention to inhibit microbial growth and extend product shelf life. While parabens are legal in the United States, they are banned in the European Union due to their status as endocrine disruptors. Multiple studies show that these chemicals can disrupt hormone release and interfere with cellular functions, such as nuclear receptors and intracellular signaling.  Hormones act in extremely small amounts, and even minor disruption in those levels may cause significant developmental and biological effects. Paraben exposure in childhood has been linked to skin irritation, reproductive dysfunction, long-term weight development issues, and increased asthma risk.

Polyacrylamide – a synthetic polymer used as a binding and thickening agent in personal care products, including baby lotions and creams. It can degrade into acrylamide, which is a neurotoxin and a possible human carcinogen.

Triclosan – an antimicrobial agent used in a variety of personal care products. Studies have linked triclosan to endocrine disruption, antibiotic resistance, and harm to aquatic life. The FDA has banned the use of triclosan in over-the-counter consumer antiseptic wash products, but it is still found in toothpastes, mouthwash and hand sanitizers.

Ethanolamines – Ethanolamines (MEA, DEA, TEA) are used as emulsifiers and foaming agents in personal care products, including baby shampoos and washes. These chemicals are associated with skin irritation, allergies, and organ toxicity.

Retinyl Palmitate Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A found in some sunscreens and skin care products. When exposed to sunlight, it can cause skin sensitivity, irritation, and may even be linked to skin cancer.

Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) –  PEGs are petroleum-based compounds used as thickeners, solvents, and softeners in personal care products. They can be contaminated with toxic impurities like ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are linked to cancer and organ system toxicity.

DMDM Hydantoin – also known as “Glydant,” is a preservative used in products like baby shampoos and lotions. It releases small amounts of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, which can cause skin irritation and allergies.

Chemicals found in Bottle Feeding, Pacifiers, Toys and Food Preparation Products for Babies & Toddlers

Bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols such as BPS and BPF – Research shows that bottle-fed babies ingest millions of microplastics daily. Many companies claim to offer BPA-free products by replacing BPA with other bisphenols, but these alternatives are just as toxic. Dr. Joseph Alan, a Harvard professor, warns that BPA-free plastic is not a safeguard

To reduce exposure, avoid using plastic products when possible. Opt for glass baby bottles, food in glass containers, or make your own baby food at home. Most importantly, never heat plastics in the microwave. Exposure rises dramatically when BPA-based products are heated up and/or scratched.  Bisphenols are endocrine disruptors. Even low-dose exposure has been linked to early puberty, behavioral problems, and increased risks of certain cancers. Studies have linked them to the activation of estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells.

Plastics, including microplastics,  have become an insidious part of our environment, infiltrating even the most intimate spaces of our lives. These tiny particles, less than five millimeters in size, originate from the degradation of larger plastic items and can be found in everyday products like baby bottles, toys, clothing and blankets and even the air we breathe. For babies and toddlers, whose bodies are still developing, exposure to plastics/microplastics is particularly concerning. Recent studies reveal that microplastics can bypass our body’s defenses, traveling through the olfactory bulb directly into the brain when inhaled, raising concerns about their impact on neurological health.

Alarmingly, clothing and textiles such as blankets and even carpet that are made with virgin and recycled polyester, nylon and other synthetic fabrics shed microplastics that are easily inhaled.

Common foods such as fish, rice, salt, and even staple ingredients like flour and sugar have been found to contain high levels of microplastic contamination. Fast foods and processed meals are also major culprits, with certain packaging and preparation methods further contributing to the problem.

While avoiding all microplastics may seem impossible, families can reduce exposure by choosing natural fiber clothing and textiles such as cotton and wool; fresh, minimally packaged foods; using glass or stainless steel containers for food and water; and by filtering drinking water. These steps are vital for protecting babies and toddlers, whose developing bodies are particularly vulnerable to the long-term health risks posed by microplastics.

Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) – PFCs are used to make products resistant to stains, water, and grease. They are found in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and stain-resistant fabrics, including some baby clothing and bedding. Studies have linked PFC exposure to developmental issues, liver damage, immune system dysfunction, and endocrine disruption.

Phthalates – Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are artificial fragrance additives found in almost all products with “fragrance” on the label. They are also used in many plastic toys. Since phthalates are not chemically bound to plastics, they can easily migrate to the surface and enter the body. Always choose products labeled “phthalate-free” and opt for fragrance-free items with transparent ingredient lists. Phthalates are also used to soften PVC, so choose natural materials for baby bottles and toys. Children are particularly vulnerable to toxins like phthalates, which are associated with hormone disruption, reduced sperm count, and reproductive organ malformations.

PFAS – PFAS are a type of PFC but deserve separate attention due to their ubiquity—there are over 15,000 chemicals in this class. PFAS have been linked to serious health and environmental issues. We did an extensive report on the health and environmental impacts of PFAS. In that report, you can find a free printable guide to help you avoid toxic PFAS “Forever Chemicals” in the everyday products that you shop for. A recent study by Penn State shows that early life exposures to PFAS permanently disrupt gut microbiome and may be contributing to the recent epidemic of metabolic disorders including obesity and Type 2 diabetes. PFAS are also carcinogenic and are known to be endocrine disruptors. PFAS are commonly found in carpeting, furniture, clothing and car seats, and increasingly, in our water. Since PFAS are toxic at ultra-low levels, ensure that your water filter removes these chemicals. You can also support efforts to regulate PFAS by signing the petition to protect consumers from these “forever chemicals.”

SAFER ALTERNATIVES TO PRODUCTS CONTAINING PFAS:

PFAS-FREE CAR SEATS

Chemicals found in diapers, wipes and diaper rash products

Tributyltin (TBT) – commonly found in the top sheet and adhesive areas of disposable diapers. It is known to be cardiotoxic, gonadotoxic, embryotoxic, and fetotoxic, posing serious developmental risks to babies. TBT is also highly toxic to marine life and has been linked to imposex (a condition affecting the reproductive systems of aquatic animals).

Quaternium-15 – a preservative used in some baby care products, such as shampoos and wipes. It can release formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, and can cause skin and eye irritation.

Talcum –  Talcum powder has been associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Johnson & Johnson faced nearly $9 billion in lawsuits due to their talc-based baby powders. Despite these concerns, talc is still used in products like Desitin diaper rash paste.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS:

Chemicals found in Baby & Toddler sunscreens

Oxybenzone – a common ingredient in chemical sunscreens due to its effectiveness against UV rays. However, the European Commission proposed limiting its concentration to 2.2%, while the US allows up to 6%. Oxybenzone is a potential hormone disruptor, linked to high rates of allergic reactions, and can be detected in breast milk, urine, and blood for weeks after use. It is also harmful to coral reefs.

Padimate-O – a chemical found in some sunscreens that absorbs UVB radiation. Unfortunately, it has been shown to produce free radicals that can damage DNA and has been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS: Select sunscreens that use zinc oxide (which is also considered ocean-safe).

Chemicals found in nail polish

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) –  DBP is used in nail polish to reduce chipping. As a member of the phthalate family, DBP acts as an endocrine disruptor, mimicking estrogen in the body. Animal studies have shown that DBP can impair hormonal development, decrease fertility, cause organ damage, and potentially contribute to early-onset menopause. The European Union has banned DBP in cosmetics and personal care products, while the Australian government classifies it as a risk to human reproductive health. In the U.S., California considers DBP a reproductive and hormonal toxicant, though it remains unregulated at the federal level.

Toluene – a solvent in some nail polishes, used to achieve a smooth application and finish. Its fumes are highly toxic and can cause neurological damage, decreased brain function, impaired breathing, hearing loss, and nausea. For pregnant women, frequent inhalation of toluene may impair fetal development. Animal studies also link toluene to reproductive impairment, immune system toxicity, and blood cancers. The European Union restricts toluene in personal care products and advises against exposure for pregnant women and children. In California, it is listed as a Prop 65 chemical harmful to fetal development.

Formaldehyde  used in nail polishes as a hardener and preservative. Exposure to formaldehyde, either airborne or on the skin, can cause cancer of the throat, nose, and blood. It poses risks of chronic health issues, including asthma, nausea, and miscarriages, especially for nail salon workers and their children. The European Union restricts formaldehyde use in personal care products, while Japan and Sweden have banned it completely.

Phenol formaldehyde resin – a by-product of formaldehyde found in many nail polishes. Preliminary studies suggest it may cause severe skin irritation, allergic reactions, skin depigmentation, and loss of nerve sensation.

Camphor the ingredient used to give conventional nail polishes their glossy, shiny appearance. It has been linked to severe skin irritation, allergic reactions, nausea, dizziness, and headaches when applied topically or inhaled. Camphor exposure may also lead to organ damage, including liver dysfunction. In the U.S., camphor concentration in personal care products is limited to 11%, and its use is being phased out in the European Union.
